June 13, 2017 5-8 pm, at the National Library in Georgetown, Supporters of the philosophy of Peoples Power, the Global Justice for Walter Rodney Committee, and the Working People’s Alliance have called for a conversation for patriotic Guyanese to gather and summon the courage to discuss the possible paths forward for the working people of Guyana. 37 years after the assassination of Walter Rodney on June 13, 1980, and 25 years since the first free elections in 1992, the inequality gap between the poorest sections of the working people and the noveau riche (new rich) is reaching crisis levels not seen since the early 1980s. The time has come for patriotic Guyanese to coalesce, find common purpose, and resolve to create bottom- up, people- oriented solutions to the many deep-seated issues faced by the working people.

walter-1-202x300Because of divisive politics, the racial, social, and economic issues that place the working peoples in jeopardy are hardly being addressed. All the governments since 1992 have been trapped by the neoliberal agenda, and as such developed very few people-centered plans and hence have not implemented many programs to arrest the economic and social divide in the land. We know that each of the political parties and their adjuncts can boast of “progressive” election manifestoes, but after each election, these parties have silently abandoned most of the lofty ideals of their manifestos and with that the working people. Therefore, we are using this anniversary to begin a conversation. It is time for Guyanese of different races, classes, genders, ages, religions, sexual identities, and disabilities to speak with each other, rather than at each other. For too long we have dehumanized each other because of divisive caste politics. Let us begin to talk to each other and use this as the means to rebuild civility and decency.

We see conversations as essential at this time. Walter Rodney’s vision of Peoples Power was firmly planted in the philosophy of self-emancipation, and involvement of the people in the decision-making process. It is in this spirit that we invite the public to gather and engage each other on the possible paths forward. What is required at this time is constructive engagement.

Signed,

Supporters of the philosophy of Peoples Power, the Global Justice for Walter Rodney Committee, and the Working People’s Alliance
